Monday, April 22, 2013 at 4:40PM TALMAR is supported by volunteers of all ages. Because of the help, dedication and passion of our volunteers, we are able to grow abundantly and provide valuable programs for people with special needs.
As spring progresses, there is more and more to do here on the farm, and volunteers are always a bright spot in my day. As the farm manager, I have an ever-lengthening list of chores, big and small. Having helpers come to the farm means we can increase the amount of things we grow and the time we spend with our vocational training and horticultural therapy. What are some of the things volunteers are helping out with this season? We have volunteers working in the greenhouse planting seeds and transplanting seedlings. We have folks in the field helping us to prune, weed, mulch and plant. And we have college students lending us their capable hands.
In my day-to-day I am blessed with such helpers, but I also want to call attention to the many volunteers who help out behind the scenes. Over the past year we've had people help answer the phone, organize our seed inventory, raise funds, and account for our earnigns. A very special behind the scenese group is our Board of Directors. This group provides the organizational oversight and governance of TALMAR--they make sure we dot our 'i's and cross those pesky 't's.
I can't quite put into words how grateful I am for those of you who dig right in and lend a hand. I hope that the seed of volunteerism will flourish and grow with our farm this season.
Thanks to all of our volunteers who made it out to our Volunteer Appreciation Day! This event was a huge success and allowed us all the opportunity to spend time together in this special place!

This spring we'll be hosting a few special programs for people with special needs. On Monday we worked with a group of Parkville High School Students to give them an introduction to the greenhouse. In the coming weeks and months we'll be starting seeds, preparing beds and planting flowers and vegetables.
