TALMAR Interns play key roles in the day-to-day activities at Talmar. TALMAR interns participate in all aspects of the horticultural operation, while working with a diversity of consumers of all ages, including those with special needs. Interns make important contributions in all areas of the life and activities at TALMAR Gardens and Horticultural Center and assist in making goals and success possible.Though farm activities are interconnected, we offer two focus areas for interns:
-Horticultural Therapy Internship: HT interns have a special interest in working with people with special needs in the therapeutic garden environment at TALMAR. Most of our consumers have a developmental disability that may include mild to moderate mental retardation, learning disabilities, Down Syndrome, emotional disabilities, or may present some form of Autism, a Youth-At-Risk, etc. Interns participate in our HT programs by helping to plan and facilitate group activities or work one-on-one with a consumer. TALMAR is an approved intern site for those seeking certification from The American Horticultural Therapy Association (AHTA).
-Organic Agriculture Internship: Organic Ag interns will gain skills and experience working on a small flower and produce farm. Interns will learn to use basic farm equipment, and be introduced to greenhouse management, field cultivation, harvesting, post harvest handling, and marketing. Working on the farm is rigorous, fast-paced, and very rewarding!
