Consumers in TALMAR programs increase their opportunities for further job training experiences, career development and entrepreneurial opportunities. They develop appropriate job-related social skills, increase their confidence and self-esteem which makes them more marketable in the competitive workplace and promotes positive job references for future employment.
Consumers at TALMAR, who are trained in vocational skills, are also taught greenhouse operation and management. These consumers are individuals with less intense needs than those who participate only in the horticultural therapy programs. They are usually 18 to 21 years old and most often come to TALMAR from schools that offer their students with disabilities opportunities to participate in community work experience. They work two to three days each week, three to four hours a day. Activities primarily involve the transplanting of seedlings to the fields, maintenance, harvesting flowers, bunching flowers for sale and direct sales to the general public or contracted floral customers.
