
All Field Trip options include a welcome introduction about Talmar and how we grow and sell organic specialty flowers. Field Trip Options:
OPTION 1: A Horticultural Therapy activity is planned for your group. This field trip is oriented to individuals who may have more physical or developmental challenges. Activities may include use of adaptive tools to enable success and will include a “Make and Take” project such as:
- Decorating a Clay Pot
- Filling the pot with soil
- Choosing and planting a plant
- Watering
OPTION 2: Includes “Make and Take” activities (choose 2 from Column "A" and 1 from Column "B")
OPTION 3: Includes “Make and Take” activities (choose 2 from column A and 2 from column B)
Column "A" Activities:
- Learn "Leave No Trace" Principles.
- Walk to the Stream (steps). Explore
minnows swimming though rocks. - Walk through 3 acres of flower fields. Explore garden insects and butterflies that live in the garden.
- Explore garden insects and butterflies that live in the garden.
- Garden in the field with Talmar staff (planting, "deadheading," harvesting, etc).
- Learn the basics of what makes a greenhouse work. Students will be able to work among staff and be a part of the production team, planting seeds, propagating plants (creating one plant from another), transplanting, etc.
- Tool identification: "what is that tool for?"
- Safety first, last and always!
- Reading a seed package and planting seeds.
- Yesterday's home remedies using flowers from our field!
Column "B" Activities:
- Make a picture frame using items picked from nature walk.
- Learn the basics of floral arrangements. Pick flowers from the garden and create a fresh flower arrangement to take home (June-November).
- Learn about leaves and make a leaf rubbing.
- Veggies (dependant upon season, our
vegetable garden can offer many hands on
activities). Call office for information. - Make a pressed flower bookmarker from flowers in our garden.
- Harvest lavender from our garden to make
a lavender wand. Wonderful scent! - Learn about herbs, what they are used for and how they grow. Make an herb dish garden to take home.
- Make a terrarium in a plastic bottle using
plants from our greenhouse and nature items
selected from their nature walk.
